About Us

OUR STORY

The story of how Sonnihaus began goes back to both our roots as a husband-and-wife duo. Sean's life revolved around art, digital tech or health science, and I, Jane, was a musician and design enthusiast. Both of us are Korean by heritage, with much of our life spent in Canada. However, things started to get interesting after making our move to Niagara Falls, CA. With only a few months of adjusting to a new city, the dreaded pandemic hit. Suddenly we had no community and nowhere to go. To soothe the pain of anxiety (and boredom), we turned to creating things, like all artists do. In comes 3D Printing, and our creative journey took off, and we never looked back.

As we shared our creations with friends and family, their positive feedback encouraged us to take a leap and establish Sonnihaus. After a year of tinkering, Sonnihaus was launched in October 2022.

Our styles lean towards Asian pottery, plants, florals, and clever designs that are found in places like Korea or Japan. Simultaneously, we felt a sense of home in Post Modern and Scandinavian interiors. It makes sense that these inspirations merge into our own work, with a focus on natural colors and thoughtful designs.

With an eco-friendly approach, using corn-based biodegradable PLA plastic, adds an extra touch of sustainable and approachable luxury to our products. From charming plant accessories to captivating tablescape decor, our offerings elevate homes and make thoughtful gifts for loved ones. We look forward to introducing more designs and connecting with remarkable individuals like you.

OUR PROCESS

Each of our products start from scratch - either a problem that needs a solution, or a missing piece for plants and decor. We then observe our ideas in written form filled with drawings, measurements, and structural mapping. The next step is to design it digitally, rendering it through software. We then transfer the digital file to an SD card, and start prototyping on the 3D printer. Many different versions of the product are made until we are happy with the quality. The most interesting step is to live with it for a few days in our home and to observe how we interact with it. The last changes are made, and the final step is to see how we can efficiently and sustainably make our product in our print farm studio.

Our studio is located in Niagara Falls, where Jane oversees production, gathers ideas for designs, marketing, and e-commerce shop, while Sean also designs or troubleshoots all of our machines and tech.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

Our materials play an important role in our production. We use a corn-based bioplastic filament called PLA, which is biodegradable or recyclable in specialized industrial facilities. Any scraps, prints that failed, or didn’t pass the test are collected and sent to a local 3D printing filament factory to be grinded up and used again for new filament spools.

Sustainability is always a conversation that we want to keep up with, and we believe that it is important to talk about it in the design or maker world. Eco-friendly should not sacrifice style, or price for that matter. Whether it is for plants, home decor, or organization, our products range from low, mid, and high price points so that good design is accessible to everyone.
